Obey your leaders and submit to them – and don’t believe everything they say!:)?

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king!

In our time (and throughout the history of the Christian Church) there have been abusive and manipulative leaders trying to seduce the believers in the church. Jesus Himself warned for them, Paul wrote that they would rise from among the leaders in the church. I support the approach in the article from Jonas Melin in the daily Christian paper to 100% at the same time I would like to raise a flag.

The main Christian news during the “summer news drought” in Sweden has been the heretic teachings of Bennie Hinn, his divorce process and possible relationship to Paula White, which he stopped. With that as backdrop I understand the need for Jonas’ teachings as we time after time discover the lack of knowledge and discernment among believers as they run after teachers who give them what they want (and not what they need).

Jonas uses the teachings of Paul as guidelines for evaluating whether or not a teaching/sermon/preaching/dogma is from God or not. In different blogs, I have addressed exactly the same issues as Jonas in regards to teaching, the life and lifestyle of the leader and her/his character. (Don’t forget that almost all requirements for elders and deacons in the church according to Timothy and Titus are character issues – not spiritual gifts!)

The problem we face is that many people in our churches today are Biblically illiterate; they don’t have the Biblical knowledge (nor input which helps them to get it) and therefore they don’t have a sound Biblical foundation by which to evaluate teachings and people’s seductive approaches (seduction implies that things are done in a non-obvious way and therefore requires a healthy basis and discernment).

Another aspect is the we are spiritually, emotionally and socially starving; the lack of intimacy, real and meaningful relationships in the Church and the absence of God’s supernatural intervention in our society and life as Church make us very vulnerable and willing to embrace situations, contexts and leaders where things seem to happen, which at other times would not be considered interesting.

Lastly, a short observation… we live in a country where people from the day they were born have been encouraged to question everyone and everything. (Strangely enough this is not always practiced as we have seen earlier on). However, there is a deep resentment and suspicion of leadership in general. We almost exalt questioning of people in authority as a virtue within our culture. That’s why so many Christian leaders in our nations stop being leaders! It is just too hard to be a God-loving, God-fearing and God-obeying leader as people don’t show respect, reference and submission to those who are put in leadership (yes, I realize some have TAKEN this leadership position – it is not always God-given).

Hebrews 13: 15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that confess his name. 16And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. 17Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.

Here we find a healthy challenge; we are to test (not to question!) everything and at the same time we are called to have a reference and respect for those whom God has put as leaders among us. My approach to this is that I will always start with TRUST – not questioning. What is your approach?

Stockholm Pride avoids scrutiny and is handled by the press with silk gloves!

Category : Featured, global, justice, lifestyle, Political Correctness, Relationships, sverige, Sweden

No other organization or association in Sweden would get away with the kind of irresponsible financial dealings and practices as employed by the Stockholm Pride association! And the question is why? Different media (latest on the TV4 news, but also in SVD, here and here, GP, DN here Aftonbladet here and Dagen) have addressed the unexplainable loss of 2,4 million kronor from last year’s festival.

No real inquiry has been done according to Jon Voss, chief for the publishing house QX who has followed Pride since it’s beginning and who is critical to how things have been dealt with. “How could money like that just disappear?” It is a great mystery!

Normally the press loves mysteries and they love to bring people and organizations on their knees to the confession booth where they can confess their sins and mistakes. Not so with Pride! Strangely enough our united press shows much tolerance and unbelievably much grace in this situation. In other cases (do I have to name them: Stadsmissionen, the Red Cross, Ersta hospital) employers or members of boards were publically “crucified” and exposed, in this case we find an almost unnatural quiet and slumbering attitude from the press and we can’t just blame the “summer drought of the news desk”. Here is front page news and the amazing thing is that the different reporters only report the information given by the responsible persons within Pride without asking the nasty questions which in other cases are bombarded at people and organizations!

Again the question is WHY?

Call me dumb, ignorant or right out stupid, but I have the sense that the reason why Pride gets away without much negative publicity is the fact that it is Pride. Pride is endorsed, supported, empowered and sponsored by a broad spectrum of different organizations and companies. It is sponsored and supported by many different entities from national politicians and political organizations to Stockholm city (450.000 kronor), from SL to Heineken, Scandic, Swedbank, Statoil and dozens of smaller and larger companies. They all give their “token of support” while covering a couple of million kroner for this year’s event.

So why is no one putting the breaks on and asking the nasty questions? Because it is politically not correct to do so! Let’s not forget that many of the Pride-lobbying people are active members of our media circus! They are the ones who determine what is written and how stuff is written; they are the ones who angle the cameras and the questions asked. They are the ones who decide whether news is news and on what page it should be published (or hidden)!

I might not be in the main stream of media production but I am not ignorant! It doesn’t take a prophet to see what is happening here… My only question is “When will a real researching journalist dare to touch this hot potato?

Leadership and Truth: Benny Hinn questioned in Sweden and the Word of Life Church after his sermon! (Livets Ord).

20

Category : Church, Featured, global, Jesus Christ, justice, leadership, lifestyle, mission, Relationships, sverige, Sweden

Are we looking for ecstatic experiences, super-natural kicks or are we looking for God Himself?  The other day as I wrote about the stepping down of Litorin I wrote a blog about the importance of integrity in leadership. Leadership in general whether Christian or non-Christian, is first of all about integrity, as I today write about Benny Hinn and his leadership I cannot avoid writing about Truth!

Latest last night as an old friend asked me whether I was planning to go and listen (see) Benny Hinn, my response was: “That is the last thing I would do.” I have seen and read too much about Benny Hinn and his lifestyle contrary to what Scripture teaches. And until now I have not even addressed his teachings and praxis.

Lately there has been much discussion about Benny Hinn here in Sweden (here, here, here, here, here, ) because of the invitation of Livets Ord, (The Word of Life Church) led by Ulf Ekman. Different aspects have been addressed in this discussion; the fact that he is in the middle of a divorce- situation with his wife with whom he has been married 22 years without taking a time-out form his ministry. But other voices address his teaching, his showmanship as he ministers, and of course his prosperous, affluent lifestyle where money never seems an issue.

I know there are always controversies over people who are influential, because by nature many of us are jealous, competitive and arrogant and cannot accept that someone is better or more-liked than we are.

But in the midst of this process we have some new, hard facts about Benny’s teachings, which made even his friend Ulf Ekman, react clearly.  What I like about Ulf is his willingness to confront Benny about these things, what I don’t like is that he didn’t do it publicly at the meeting after Benny’s sermon as he only told the conference participants to go home and check what they heard with their Bibles.

The other day I found out that news articles (rumours?) would be released (Aug 2) about a special romantic relationship of Benny Hinn with Paula White, another television preacher, in the National Enquirer a gossip magazine in the US although, at that moment, the Swedish bloggers and press had not caught up on the story, I decided to not write about it as the information and the trustworthiness of the magazine could be questioned. Both Benny and Paula White have written on their websites to denounce this relationship. It is clearly from reading their responses that they have synchronized their views and stories as they almost use similar wording in their statements.

Anyway, now Ulf Ekman is questioning Benny in an in-depth blog that he wrote today. I will freely translate some of Ulf’s perspectives that are important for this subject.

After a long introduction writing how Benny’s ministry has touched the lives of so many people and Ulf’s experiences of this in many conferences he says:

Having said all of this, I must say that in all the meetings where I have been with him, I have never before heard what he said and taught here (Uppsala, Sweden) yesterday. His teachings, and he is not alone in those, seem to be more developed and worked through by him more than by any other person, went way beyond that which I believe to be classical Christian faith and healthy teaching. It had not only Gnostic influences; it had unfortunately intersections with pure Gnosticism.

On Saturday night it started off well as Benny spoke about the Holy Spirit as a person, not only as a power. But soon the address moved away from the focus and became speculative as he addressed pre-adamitical races and an earlier fall into sin. It became more complicated as he moved from the Trinity to the “human trinity”. Our bodies are not only an outer shell, like a glove that we throw off, but it is an essential and integrated part of our identity and personality. We should not devaluate the importance of the body. We are not a spirit in contrast to our body. We are a spirit, a soul and body, or spirit and flesh, and human’s so-called “trinity” keeps together as a unit, our personality. And we cannot separate this in different isolated compartments. Therefore the resurrection of the body is so important since it is as important as the soul, which Benny mentioned, but only in passing by.

When he finally arrived to Jesus in his sermon he addressed in certain parts a heretic picture of Jesus. The Son was not an eternal Son, the Father was not an eternal Father and it sounded as if there had been a time when the Son didn’t exist. I asked him this right after this meeting and then he denied that and said that he meant that the Son was eternal as Word and first was called “Son” as he came to the earth.

It became more remarkable as he speculated about the fact “that if Jesus had sinned his body would not have been subjected unto decay.” This is important to reprove, because if true, Jesus body was no real body, which leaves us with an incomplete, docetic, and ostensible incarnation. Docetism and the heretic Marcion teaches that the body of Jesus was only an illusion. It was seemingly real, but still not since God will not engage and mix with matter, which is evil. The Christian faith says that the body of Jesus was fully human. If He was not fully human, he could not identify with us ad could not become our replacement and thus we could not be saved.

Later on he shared that Jesus’ blood didn’t come from Mary but directly from God. That’s not true. In Mary and through Mary Jesus humanity was developed and that includes all the parts of his physical body, also his blood. The blood is a part of his physical body and his true human identity…

…It would have been better for Benny to have left out his deep “insights” without making things too difficult for him beyond his capacity and instead have spoken about Jesus in a powerful way which he is able to do and often has done and as an evangelist should do. That would have been enough for us and it is important to fully present the Biblical Jesus.

It seems as if the whole matter becomes a settlement with different Gnostic influences within the Christian faith, but I didn’t believe that we would hear that from Benny Hinn on this particular evening. It was an unpleasant surprise that it came so strongly and so much of it. The fact is that it came and it has therefore to be reproved. In the end it is about salvation, where a illusive, docetic Jesus can not save, which leads to myths and speculations…

Ulf is happy to be Benny’s friend and has confronted him with all the issues addressed above. Now the question is: “will he stand corrected”? Will Benny show his willingness to be interdependent within the Body of Christ and with brothers and sisters (who all sin and who all need forgiveness and correction) and to bow under the Lordship of Jesus as Head?

Or will Benny see this as an occasion where a person “touches the Lord’s anointed” and put a curse on him?

I don’t know what the outcome will be, I hope that he will be able to allow others to speak into his life, not only in this matter but in so many other areas as well so that his life will become a reflection of His Lord:

Phil 2: 3 -8 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross!

Time will tell!

“Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s: the Swedish Church”

Category : Church, leadership, Relationships, sverige, Sweden

Maud Olofsson, leader of the Centre party which is part of the governing coalition says in an interview with the Christian Daily “Dagen”, about her perspective on the Swedish Church, that “ don’t want to church to be led by priests” (“Vi vill inte att kyrkan ska ledas av präster”)…

In an earlier blog I wrote: Svenska Kyrkan – The Swedish Church – Politics as usual! Please: R.I.P! I think it is about time to truly separate the Swedish Church from politics and to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s! So many of the discussions around the wedding of the Crown Princess Victoria were born out of this same problem.

Isn’t it time to let go of The Swedish Church as an extension of live in this “kingdom of Sweden” and not to be led by sentimental reasoning (the church of the people – which church, which people?) and political power systems, forcing their political agenda’s down our throats?

Mitt förslag: skatteavdrag för gåvor och volontärinsatser! – My proposal tax deduction for financial gifts and volunteer work…

1

Category : Church, Featured, lifestyle, sverige, Sweden

Different political parties are on a crusade in regards to making financial contributions to charities tax-deductible. (Here, Here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here). In contrast to the large majority of nations within the Western Hemisphere, Sweden has yet to honor financial giving to non-profit organizations and charities within the tax-deductable context of our (heavy) taxing system. I recognize that there are a number of issues we need to deal with: what is the real motivation behind the giving? Would people give more, what would be the effect of giving on the needs and issues that we face in our society? If we only would count in effectiveness and cold figures we have to balance both sides of motivation for giving, namely: generosity and financial advantage.

The whole issue of support of non-profit organizations and charities is not enhanced by the different cases of bribery, misuse and abuse of power of those within some of these organizations and churches. Scams, bad management and high-rising administrations costs have made the general public (and giver) suspicious of the intensions and priorities of these organizations.

Eva Nordström of Tankesmedjan Sektor 3, which has conducted research on the consequences and changes of a possible tax deduction, has communicated that 30% of the population (16 years and older) would start to give or increase their giving if part of their financial support could be considered tax deductable. 12% said they are not yet giving to such causes at the moment. These figures imply that 900,000 new “givers” could be part to support causes that would benefit our society. Another 1,3 million people would increase their giving!

Of course we have to realize that some people consider us as national traitors if we would give donations (according to Johan Vamstad), as if we were trying to create another, (American) model as to institutionalize donations as a part of our welfare state!

So why would we give? In research done in other countries 85% of the contributors gave as reason that they wanted to be part of improving the welfare of others. Different motives could be retraced from the survey: some had religious motivations by giving to those who had less, others because they identified with the cause, again others want to “give back” – at the same time at surveys in the US 20% made clear that they used the tax deduction as a reason to give since it gave them advantages. No matter their motivation let us remember that it leaves another 80% with a healthy and good motivation. To give some perspective; Americans give at a level four times that of Britain and Germany.

So some of the questions are still the same: Are we greedy or generous?

A fact that surfaced clearly is that households in which members volunteer for charitable causes or at their church give more than twice as much money to charities than households with no volunteers!

Another point of interest to be considered: Should we count voluntarily time investments as another tax-deductable items in our attempt to create equality and justice for all within this system? Many people give many hours a week for good causes and “Time is money” after all!

I hope you realize that I am joking about this latter issue; I, together with my wife, will continue to give, not only the 10% of our income to the ministry of the church to which we belong, we give beyond that, not because we must, not because we are expected, or to gain something. We give, because we have learned the secret that it is better to give then to receive; we have learned how giving enriches life! It’s a joy!

If, against all odds we will have the opportunity for tax-deductible financial support to charities and non-profit organizations, we will be able to give more… so, more joy will be added to our family!

That’s the Way we see it!

Biblical reference in Daniel’s speech to Crown Princess Victoria – what did he really mean?

Category : Featured, Jesus Christ, lifestyle, Relationships, sverige, Sweden

Daniel quoted part of the last verse of 1 Corinthians 13: 13 as he said: “Victoria, greatest of all is love. I love you dearly” (Victoria, störst av allt är kärleken. Jag älskar dig så, sade prins Daniel). (Here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here).

1 Corinthians 13:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

As a pastor of a church with many young people I have the privilege to conduct the wedding ceremony for dozens of couples during the last 17 years. Many of couples wanted to read 1 Corinthians 13, the scripture of which Daniel quoted.

The first time I ever read this particular scripture was when a young girl (who is now my wife) shortly after our conversion to Jesus Christ wrote down the whole text of this chapter in a personal letter to me without telling me it was a quote from the Bible. Since I had not read the whole Bible at the time, I was blown away with what I perceived as being this profound wisdom of love in my girlfriend’s poem (that’s what I thought it was)! It was a beautiful and deep statement of love.

It was years later that I started to understand what it was all about. It is not a coincidence that chapter 13 in the letter to the Corinthians is found between chapters 12 & 14 which speak about the spiritual gifts and the use thereof. Here in the middle of the supernatural spiritual gifts, the apostle Paul stops and refocuses on that what is to carry these gifts in one’s life; namely “LOVE” – (Agape, as the original Greek word says).

I am not doubting Daniel’s love for Victoria, neither do I doubt the love which led so many other young couples decide to use this text as Bible reading in their wedding ceremonies. However, I do wonder whether they understand what this is all about.  The press (including the Christian press) is writing almost sentimentally about this fact, the choice of words and the quotation from the Bible.

The essence of agape love as found in 1 Corinthians 13 is self-sacrifice. Unlike our English word “love,” agape is not used in the Bible to refer to romantic or sexual love. Nor does it refer to close friendship or brotherly love, for which the Greek word philia is used. Nor does agape mean charity, a term which the King James translators carried over from the Latin. Agape love is unique and is distinguished by its nature and character. Agape is love, which is of and from God, whose very nature is love itself.

“Divine gift love in a man enables him to love what is not naturally lovable — lepers, criminals, enemies, morons, the sulky, the superior, and the sneering.”

You might think I am picky to question the use of such a Scripture, but I believe there is already too much devaluation in the use and meaning of the Bible and even of the word “love”; I love ice-cream, I love that t-shirt, I would love to see him fail, tonight we will make (fake) love… and you will know another dozen of applications of that same word.

C. S. Lewis the famous British author wrote a book on the “four loves” where he explained the different words describing love in Biblical (New Testament) times. One favorite quotation I want to share from that book: “To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, and irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.” C.S. Lewis (The Four Loves)

I wish Victoria and Daniel as a new couple much Agape love which will not only touch and transform their own lives but also the lives of everyone they come in contact with!

That’s the Way I see it!

John

Below a short summary of Lewis’ explanation of the different loves…

  1. Affection (storge, στοργή) is fondness through familiarity, especially between family members or people who have otherwise found themselves together by chance. It is described as the most natural, emotive, and widely diffused of loves: natural in that it is present without coercion; emotive because it is the result of fondness due to familiarity; and most widely diffused because it pays the least attention to those characteristics deemed “valuable” or worthy of love and, as a result, is able to transcend most discriminating factors. Ironically, its strength is also what makes it vulnerable. Affection has the appearance of being “built-in” or “ready made”, says Lewis, and as a result people come to expect, even to demand, its presence—irrespective of their behavior and its natural consequences.
  2. Philia – Friendship is a strong bond existing between people who share a common interest or activity. Lewis explicitly says that his definition of friendship is narrower than mere companionship.
  3. Eros (ἔρως) is love in the sense of ‘being in love’. This is distinct from sexuality, which Lewis calls Venus, although he does spend time discussing sexual activity and its spiritual significance in both a pagan and a Christian sense. He identifies eros as indifferent.
  4. Agape  (agapē, ἀγάπη) is the love that brings forth caring regardless of circumstance. Lewis recognizes this as the greatest of loves, and sees it as a specifically Christian virtue. The chapter on the subject focuses on the need of subordinating the natural loves to the love of God, who is full of charitable love.

Birger Schlaug as spokesperson for the Christian daily Dagen, Christian Faith and democracy!Birger Schlaug, who was a spokesperson for the Greens during 1985–88 and 1992–2000 and member of parliament 1994–2001, and who calls himself an atheist, wrote a blog which addressed the HBTQ issue in relationship to the refusal of the Christian Daily to publish an add. I quote (free translation):

”Dagen has refused to take in an add for a summer gathering for HBTQ people. They are doing the right thing, with the same right I take in their add which I published on the right side of this blog”.

“There is, as I said before a sort of “Mr. Nice Guy” spirit in the lives of many Christians. They interpret the Bible as if it was a good night story for children. It is not. I can find all kinds of good and fair things and say that God thinks it totally ok to have marriages with people from the same sex, only because you think it is ok, and only because you want God to be like a kind-hearted uncle in heaven who follows decisions made in a democratic way and follow trends which appear in society”.

“Dagen has the full right to refuse the add. The judgment call of Dagen is right seen from their perspective. That’s worth all respect. To reduce Christianity to a question about Mr. Nice Guy is not worthy of our respect, how ever nice that might be.”

There haven’t been many occasions that I have agreed with Birger Schlaug, but in this blog he has touched the core of the issue more than any other people dared to do!

The intolerance of the tolerance camp revisited!

1

Category : Featured, lifestyle, Relationships, Sweden

This morning editor in chief Elisabeth Sandlund of the Christian newspaper Dagen was interviewed by the national radio P1 about the decision to  reject an ad for a camp for gay, bisexual, transgender and queer Christian youth. Kyrkans Tidning (representing the former Sate Church), the Local and many bloggers have made a big deal out of that… of course, the intolerance of the so-called tolerance camp is just too obvious. In an earlier blog I wrote about that…

I want to continue to quote poet Steve Turner as he says:

We believe that there is no absolute truth, excepting the truth, that there is no absolute truth. We believe in the rejection of creeds, and the flowering of individual thought.

There is nothing new under the sun, following Jesus will continue to challenge the man-made values systems of our world.

Don’t leave anyone behind! – On Oikos evangelism

Category : Church, church planting, Featured, lifestyle, Relationships

Much has been said and written about evangelism, Dagen and many others have their opinion about evangelism in Sweden in 2010 (here, here, here, here). One of the aspects of church is not only the involvement in the new community of believers through a new life in Jesus Christ. There is an aspect that so many people forget… and that is the involvement and care for the old network of family and friends. In our church (New Life Stockholm) we have seen whole groups of people turn to Jesus because we try to consider the fact that people belong to networks and are more than just individuals “whose souls have to become saved”.

Leaving behind

Don’t leave anyone behind is not a theological statement; I want to create an awareness that faith in Christ Jesus without a doubt has a dimension where we have to leave something behind; when Jesus says “follow me” there is literally a step which requires us to leave something else.

Bringing along

At the same time, as we will shortly see in the scriptures that we will read, there is a dimension of engagement and involvement with those who are non-Christians, whether family, friends, colleges, classmates.

The NT describes many situations where we find the implementation of this dimension of Christian faith.

  • Faith is not only a personal matter, although it has to start with a personal decision.
  • Faith is also a community matter.
  • The problem today is that we have privatized faith and separated faith from daily life, basic daily decisions and behavior.
  • Faith is not private; faith is community and has a direct consequence for we way we make decisions, create values and it directs the way we behave and the direction we go.

It is an unquestionable fact in the Bible that those people who find faith in Jesus in Christ influence other people around them as a direct consequence of their newly found faith. Let’s read some Scriptures…

Lydia’s Conversion in Philippi

Acts 16: 11From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day on to Neapolis. 12From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days.

13On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. 14One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. 15 When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.

25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody’s chains came loose. 27The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”

29The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

31They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” 32Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized. 34The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole family.

In verses 15 & 31, 32 we get some important information, in both cases with Lydia and with the jailor we read about the fact that their households had come to believe and were baptized along with them.

The Oikos

The word which we have translated into “households” comes from the Greek word Oikos. In other scriptures, for example in Acts 10 verses 24 & 27 we read that this Oikos is more than just a family, or traditional household as we know it.

The Oikos represented the basic social unit by which the early church grew, spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ, the risen Lord.

Michael Green, “Evangelism in the Early Church”, confirms that “the (oikos) family understood in this broad way, as consisting of blood relations, slaves, clients and friends, was one of the strongholds of Graeco-Roman society.

We can see what an Oikos meant to the early church.

  • An oikos was the fundamental and natural unit of society, and consisted of one’s sphere of influence-his/her family, friends, and extended to acquaintances, neighbors, slaves and employees.
  • And equally important, the early church spread through oikoses-circles of influence and relationships. The first church didn’t have mass campaigns for evangelism.

Bringing along our Oikoses in relationship to God is the God-given and God-created means for naturally sharing our SUPERNATURAL message.

  • The early church spread as people within the Oikoses saw how people were transformed, how people turned from their sins, how broken people were restored, how broken relationships were mended and how hopelessness turned to hope!
  • In the early church, it was the restoration of balance, the restitution of wrongs, and the fragrance of an attractive new life that drew so many to the new Oikos that God was forming. (God’s church is also called Oikos – a new Oikos where people find a new home).

Don’t leave anyone behind! In the Scriptures, which we just read we identify how, God is not only dealing with individuals, but with whole groups, Oikoses. Summary: The apostle Paul and his small group of people were together involved in these encounters.

What can we learn:

  • Don’t go alone; you belong to a group of people who share the same faith; open your old Oikos to brothers and sisters who can help you to touch their lives with the Good News!
  • Be active, not passive. It is a deliberate choice.
  • “Begin to speak” — people must hear the Word of God.
  • When one person accepts Jesus as Savior, ask him if he/she would like to have you help them share the Good News with their Oikos!
  • The new Christian’s credibility with them opens the door for God’s love!

What have same sex relationships and kleptomania to do with each other?

Category : Church, leadership, lifestyle, Relationships, sverige, Sweden

There are so many different opinions and interpretations about the present theological “hot potatoes’ that one easily looses one’s way in its jungle. (Here, here, here, here and here… People question the way I relate to Scriptures where the Apostle Paul writes about homosexuality. Their statement is: “What did the apostle Paul really know about same-sex relations? There are so many new things that we have learned since New Testament times about the complexities of sexuality!”

They make a good point. By the Way: after having allowed myself a “slumbering blog state” for a number of months (it was hard to find time to write and express my deepest feelings), I am encouraged by different people to NOT GIVE UP writing blogs. I feel that the discussion on same sex relationships needs yet another perspective and I am motivated to use this occasion as a re-entry to the blog sphere.

“They make a good point”, I stated earlier. It is true that since the writings of the New Testament many more things have become clear to us; the (dark) wrestles of life and our soul have been brought to the surface and have been examined, analyzed, evaluated, and explained like never before.

I know that not everything we need to know about sex is right there on the pages of the Bible. Many authors who have written about sex and who researched sex had an awful lot of good things to say. Yet, I dare say that the Bible is my only and supreme authority on the subject of sex.

With that I don’t mean that it is our only source on the subject. There is a whole lot to learn from tradition, experience, and reason (including scientific investigation). But these latter mentioned sources are not authoritative. While they can provide important information and insights, it is clear to me that what the Bible is actually teaching us on a given subject supersedes all other sources. Again, we know more about sex in general, and about same-sex relations in particular, than the Apostle Paul did. It would be unwise to ignore what we can learn, there is a whole lot to learn from what people tell us about the experience of same-sex attractions, and what scientific investigation tells us about the complex issues of attraction and sexuality. All different aspects of humankind as expressed through our genes, cultures, social circumstances and theological insights need to be brought together to help us understand the question at hand. But yet… how do I dare to say that the Bible supersedes all of our insights by speaking with authority to a subject like sexuality?

Well, here we finally come in on the subject of kleptomania…It is at this point that a parallel can be drawn to sexuality. The majority of the people living in the world today have probably a greater insight and knowledge about stealing than Moses ever had. In the Ten Commandments a simple and straightforward commandment is given: “You shall not steal!”

There is really no nuance nor is any explanation given about the way this should (could) be considered. There are no links to praxis, history, experiences or principles. You shall not steal. That’s it. Don’t steal; IT IS WRONG!

During my years as pastor in New Life Church Stockholm (www.newlife.nu) I have had to deal with some people who were compulsive thieves. When meeting with them, one thing they told me was the fact that they could not help doing it… they stole things that were of no interest or value to them, and yet, time after time they stole even if it meant that their relationships and trust with other people and friends got broken. The surge to steal was like a beast within them they could not handle.

In regards to this matter, there are major drives and issues which drive people into such destructive behavior. There are psychological, social and other issues involved… YET, time after time again I had to come back in my conversations with them to that same statement, or commandment: You shall not steal!

That statement did not give me room for interpretation, or nuances. It did not give room to wiggle. It was one of those “one liners”, almost too clear, too obvious… It was unnegotionable. A cold fact… You shall not steal. No explanation, no excuses. Although much reasoning and information could be brought into the matter, only one thing remained the same: “You shall not steal!”

The point I want to make is the following: when it comes to the basics, what is right and what is wrong; the Bible supersedes all other sources. It is our authoritative guide on ethical issues. Of course we will have to consider where the rubber hits the road; that’s in the praxis in our pastoral dimension. I know there are people who steal because they have nothing to eat, others because they have a responsibility for their families. Others because they have been abused and victimized by greedy economic systems (I will in the near future write more about greed and such systems). But no matter what we can give as explanation for our actions, stealing was, is and remains wrong!

In some occasions we choose to forgive and forget, in other occasions we counsel, yet in others we send people to jail. But no matter what the cause and circumstances might be the basics are: It is wrong to steal! In the discussion on the so-called “sin catalogues” which were used by Christians and churches 30-60 years ago we have heard time after time again how insensitive the Church has been. OK! Many leaders have crawled to the cross a number of time and affirmed their guilt in these matters… But we have to realize that the large majority of the people using “the sin catalogue arguments” have not received the kind of insensitive treatment they are relating to. It’s “hear-say” in most occasions. The Church, because of its historical guilt complex has gone the opposite direction and has allowed everything without nuances as an appeasement to the guilt memory.

In days past, conservative Christians have often done a terrible job in dealing with the complexities and nuances of human sexuality. But no matter what these complexities and nuances might be… the fact remains the same: the word of God remains true and it supersedes all other sources, whether they are endorsed or not by our society or ideologies. I might be politically incorrect but I will continue to follow His Word and Truth as a basic authority yet, with a heart open to be touched to be able understand the complexities people experience.

That’s the Way I see it!
